The Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations 2002. CHIP3

The aim of CHIP is to ensure that people who are supplied with chemicals receive the information they need to protect themselves, others and the environment.

The basic requirement of CHIP is for the suppliers of chemicals to go through the process of:

Classification Identifying the dangers of the chemicals they supply
Packaging Ensuring dangerous chemicals are packaged safely
Labelling & Providing Safety Data Sheets Providing information about the chemicals' hazards to their customers

CHIP is the foundation of Great Britain's chemical control regime and affects a good deal of other legislation.

Therefore if a chemical is classified incorrectly under CHIP then any subsequent assessments (ie COSHH) based on the CHIP classification could also be wrong. Which could result in employees being over exposed to harmful substances.

Many chemicals such as cosmetic products and medicinal products are outside the scope of CHIP and have their own specific regulatory regimes. However, biocides and plant protection products, which have their own specific laws, will have to be classified and labelled according to CHIP as of July 2004.
